September Staff Spotlight: Laura Breen

This month we are featuring staff member Laura Breen. Check out her background and what keeps her moving!

Part 1: Background:

Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I grew up in Libertyville, Illinois

Q: What high school did you go to?
A: Valparaiso High School. Class of '05!

Q: What college did you go to? What degree(s) do you hold?
A: Ball State University, double major in Exercise Science and Pre-physical therapy, double minor in Sports Medicine and Spanish. Woohoo!

Q: Any special certifications/recognition?
A: Certified Personal Trainer and Health Fitness Specialist through American College of Sports Medicine, YMCA Group Exercise certified, ARC Lifeguard, CPR/ First Aid, Hatha Yoga Instructor, and Professional motivator (just kidding :) )

Q: What did you enjoy in your hometown? Favorite memory?
A: I consider my hometown Valparaiso...I moved here when I was 12. My favorite memory is going to the Indiana Dunes for the first time and running uncontrollable down the biggest sand dune, then falling on my face and eating sand. Good times...

Part 2: Inspiration

Q: What motivates you to achieve goals?
A: Life! Being alive motivates me. I have no good reason NOT to keep challenging myself and discovering new potential. I like to be a source of motivation for others, and that means staying positive in the face of a challenge and leading the way.

Q: Is there a person that inspires you? Why?
A: Lots of people inspire me... I thrive around positive energy... Heather is a big source of energy! She has a great attitude and truly cares about helping everyone. My clients inspire me. My family...my friends...my soon to be husband :)

Q: How do you inspire others?
A: I like to think I can inspire others by being strong when they need help, positive when they need a smile, and a friend when they need a hand.

Part 3: Work

Q: What is your role(s)?
A: Fitter

Q: What drove you to pursue the position(s)?
A: I wanted to work for a small local company so I could interact with local people and help in a more personal way. It's like working for a family owned business...we all care about each other! It's hard to find this feeling many places now.

Q: What are some of the various responsibilities that you have in your role(s)?
A:I help customers find a great shoe by running them them through our fit process. I offer advice about exercise and fitness, and I like to talk to each customer and learn something about everyone I work with. I like to offer my expertise on runner- specific exercises that can help each person's form, and recovery techniques to help make sticking to schedule easier. I help with sock and nutrition inventory, and order supplies when we need them!

Q: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? 10 years?
A: I see myself continuing to personal train, hopefully continuing to work at a local company like Extra Mile, and getting my Master's degree in Sports Medicine. I eventually would like to work at a University, working with sports teams.

Q:Why would someone want to consider your position?
A: It's a truly rewarding job...I love meeting new people every day and feeling like I've successfully helped each person leave the store feeling like they can run/walk/workout in more comfort.

Part 4: Random :)

Q: What are your favorite shoes?
A: Unfair question. I like too many...I'm a big fan of Mizuno though

Q: What is your favorite time of year? Why?
A: Summer, so I can wear tank tops and roll the windows down and enjoy the beach!

Q: If you could meet a famous person, who would it be? Why?
A: Chris Evans. No explanation necessary, I hope.

Q: Would you travel to Mars if guaranteed safe return to earth? Why/Why not?
A: No, it probably smells funny.

Thanks Laura!
